The impact of hormones throughout menstrual cycles on blood glucose and insulin needs (#30)

Todays episode addresses the influence of hormones throughout the menstrual cycle on glucose levels and insulin requirements. The female body as a whole and women-specific affairs are still highly under researched. Yet, by looking at the menstrual cycle we can learn much about hormones in general, important to all genders. Research around gender-specific needs, treatments and medical care is essential for the overall well-being of humanity. Fundamental research and education for girls and women around the world is needed to support and improve their diabetes management.

And those are the topics I discuss with the medical student Darius Mewes. He is studying at Charité in Berlin, Europe’s largest university hospitals and the 5th best hospital in the world. More than half of all German Nobel Prize winners in Physiology and Medicine,
including Robert Koch, have worked at there.

Together with his colleague Katarina Braune, he published an analysis of subjectively perceived glycemic variations and therapy adjustments with respect to the menstrual cycle. We discuss his findings and much more 🙂

Recap: What I know today, I wish I had known back then is… (#28)

This is a very special episode! It is a recap of all type 1 diabetic speakers of this year. Throughout 2020, I ask the guests on my show to finish 5 sentences intuitively with whatever comes to their mind first. Listen to the spontaneous, short and often curious answers of more than 15 different speakers. The outcome is surprising, funny, motivational and inspirational.

The 5 sentences they got asked to complete are:

✨ Type 1 is…

✨ What I know today, I wish I had known back then is…

    ✨ I’m grateful for…
